So my baby boy has been on an antibiotic Zythromax since Monday for an ear infection. Last weekend he started having a fever on Saturday and got up to 104 at one point...we put him in the bath to cool him down quickly and gave him IB Profen. That worked and he didn't have a fever since then however we wanted to take him to the Dr. Monday (we saw Dr. Denton) because he was still congested and had a cough. Turns out the cold is probably from the weather which is causing his cough from the runny nose which is also causing his ear infection from all the drainage, etc. We were proscribed Zythromax which is a 5 day antibiotic (most others are 10 days).
He has taken Zythromax once before and didn't have any kind of reaction. Well last night he was very irritable and we just thought it was because he didn't get a good nap or something at school. So he took a nap from 6-7 last night...then we got him up and kept him up until 8:30 hoping he would sleep the rest of the night. He did sleep great (8:30-6:30 when we had to wake him up) however when we went in to wake him up and get him dressed I noticed this rash! It was mainly around his arm pits and in the folds of his legs where his diaper is so I thought maybe it was just a reaction from the lotion I used and I didn't let it dry enough or something and then when he went to sleep those areas didn't get enough air so it caused a reaction.
Well we took him to school this morning and told the teachers to let us know if anything changed. They called around 8:40 and said it was getting worse and was now on his neck. Since I took Colton to the Dr. Monday, Kraig decided to take him to the Dr. today so we could rotate with work...so we had an appointment at 9:40 a.m. with Dr. Peyton. The Dr. said that since nothing else in his environment changed (no new foods, drinks, lotions, bath wash, etc were introduced) it's probably a reaction from the antibiotic. Luckily we forgot to give it to him this morning so he only had 3 of the 5 days he was supposed to have. The Dr said he can't have Zythromax again because it would likely cause the same reaction. He said to stop giving him the antibiotic now and to give him benadryl 4 times a day everyday until the hives are gone. So poor guy has hives and is apparently allergic to Zythromax. :-(
Good news is my big boy now weighs 23 lbs 1 oz and turned 15 months old on the 19th!
